Americas’ SAP User’s Group (ASUG) Survey Finds IT Executives Are Challenged to Address an Increase in Demand for Custom Enterprise Applications

BOSTON – May 23, 2018 – Mendix, the fastest and easiest platform to create and continuously improve mobile and web applications, in conjunction with ASUG, comprised of more than 100,000 members across North America, released research that covers IT priorities across app development, app delivery, cloud strategies, utilization of SAP apps, migration plans and other IT challenges.

One of the notable results is that more than half of respondents are unfamiliar with (61%), or not using (29%), low-code platforms, yet are facing many organizational issues that can be addressed by adopting a low-code platform.

“Digitization puts enormous pressure on IT teams,” said Hans de Visser, VP Strategic Alliance & Solutions Marketing at Mendix. “The traditional development approach of coding applications by a limited number of technically skilled developers presents a huge challenge to meet the ever-growing business demand for apps that help differentiate and compete. We’re pleased to share the findings of this survey of ASUG members to enterprise users in their benchmarking and planning for their SAP environments.”

According to 30% of respondents, the demand for custom applications is growing within companies, so much so that current backlogs are big enough to require up to 24 months to complete. This, combined with the fact that 53% of those respondents lack internal resources to develop the applications, makes low-code platform adoption a natural progression within enterprise organizations.

Other survey findings include:

  • Of the 79% of respondents who use Agile/Scrum methodologies, 42% report using it for better IT-business alignment and 22% report using it for reduced project risk
  • 32% of respondents strongly agree there is an increasing demand for custom applications integrations, and 30% somewhat agree
  • 50% report high development costs as a challenge with building custom applications
